Brassy melodies (containing the Andrews Sisters “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”) and subplots get in the way; however A&C’s regimens are some of their best in their first feature film. Cast includes Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Lee Bowman, Alan Curtis, The Andrews Siblings, Jane Frazee, Nat Pendleton, and Shemp Howard. (84 minutes,’41)
The Indian Runner: A temperamental piece in reference to a youthful gentleman’s efforts to comprehend, and get closer to, his brother who’s just returned from Vietnam. The film is lazy at times, however filled with feeling and reality, and is relatively moving. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Penelope Wilton, Denzel Washington, Kevin McNally, John Defrost, Timothy West, Juanita Waterman, John Hargreaves, Alec McCowen, Zakes Mokae, and Ian Richardson. The Fourth Protocol: An excellent thriller adjusted by Frederick Forsyth from his most popular novel. Caine plays a British agent who’s designated to foil a Russian plot that could obliterate relationships between the U.S. and England by setting off an atomic bomb near an American air base in the U.K. Brosnan does well as a Russian representative. Cast includes Michael Caine, Pierce Bronson, Joanna Cassidy, Ned Beatty, Betsy Brantley, Peter Cartwright, David Conville, Matt Frewer, Ray McAnally, and Ian Richardson. (119 minutes,’87)
Blithe Spirit: A delectable adaptation of Noel Coward’s comedy fantasy in regards to a guy whose long since passed first spouse appears to haunt and tease him in his recently wedded life. Rutherford is remarkable as Madame Arcati, the metaphysical medium. This film made an Oscar for its visual effects. Cast includes Rex Harrison, Constance Cummings, Kay Hammond, Margaret Rutherford, Hugh Wakefield, and Joyce Carey. (96 minutes,’45)
The Only Game in Town: This romance of a chorus girl and a gambler takes place in Las Vegas but was shot in Paris, and it definitely hurts the film. There is little action and the inside scenes slow pace of this delightful adaptation of Frank D. Gilroy’s play. Beatty is phenomenal. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Warren Beatty, Charles Braswell, Hank Henry, and Olga Valery. (113 minutes,’70)
Primal Fear: Hotshot Chicago lawyer defends an altar boy implicated of brutally killing a much loved archbishop even though all proof appears to point to the youthful gentleman’s guilt. Gere gives a powerful performance in one of his best roles, as an arrogant attorney who, for once, doesn’t have all the facts straight. Newcomer Norton is additionally very impressive. The film loses some of its impact by going on too long and by following unconnected tale facets. Richard Gere, Laura Linney, John Mahoney, Alfie Woodard, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Terry O’Quinn, Andre Braugher, Steven Bauer, Joe Spanq, Tony Plana, Stanley Anderson, Maura Tierney, and Jon Seda. A Life of Her Own: Turner is at the hub of 3-way romance leading to heartbreak for all. Dvorak wraps it up with her master depiction of an aging model. Cast includes Lana Turner, Ray MillaItd, Tom Ewell, Louis Calhern, Ann Dvornk, Margaret Phillips, Jean Hagen, Barry Sullivan, and Phyllis Kirk. (108 minutes,’50)
