Current, the ‘free verse’ style of poetry is the most popular. In the late 19th century, Walt Whitman is credited with originating the form. Before his time, poetry was restricted to certain rhyming schemes and forms.
Patterns are common to formal poetry. Scansion is the analyzing of rhyme and meter. A letter is commonly places at the end of each line beginning with the first letter of the alphabet A for the first rhyme, and B for the second, etc.
Children can learn to write poetry when they are shown the basics. It does not matter if you are a parent or a teacher. Here are 6 steps to get you started.
1. Write a list of words. On the board or at home on a piece of paper write a list of words that rhyme. An example would be: try, high, fly, kite, night, fun, run, roam, home, etc. Next, have the children arrange some of the words in a sentence.

Much of Donovan’s success was seen during the 1960’s, but in recent years, he has released a new album called “Beat Cafe”, a boxed set called “Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan”, and a book called “The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man”.

Although she has quite an impressive resume under her belt, you might be surprised to learn she’s still a child.
Akiane started drawing when she was only four. It didn’t take long to go from drawing to painting, and by age seven, she was also writing poetry. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Canada, Singapore and England. Her memberships include the Kids’ Hall of Fame and the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children.
Starting off writing a book is easy and finishing is both a relief and a triumph, but there’s a long stretch in the middle where you can’t see either shore and you’re not even sure you’re heading the right way.
Start with the largest distinctions, the number of pages, the number of chapters, and so on. Then move to the size of paragraphs, how much of the book is dialogue, etc.
