Applying for Scholarships: Make Yourself Competitive

by Elizabeth Barnum

Almost all major scholarships are highly competitive. As a result, it is important for your application packet to stand out. Follow these seven tips and it will.

1. Typing is always better than writingit’s easier to read and looks more professional. Write only when necessary.

2. Provide reference letters from professionals only. Letters of reference from employers and educators are best. References from co-workers, neighbors, etc. can only hurt you (even if they are glowing)…

3. Neatness and organization count. That’s worth repeating. Neatness and organization count. Got it?

4. Avoid being disqualified for an incomplete application. Complete each section of the scholarship application as if winning the scholarship depended on it. It does.

5. Waiting until the last minute to file your application can create a bad impression. Be early.

6. Attach all documents together with a large paper clip. Do not use staples. Put everything in an attractive, well constructed folder.

7. Mail the folder in a large envelope so nothing will have to be folded and everything will arrive looking crisp.

Will following these rules guarantee you a scholarship? Sorry, it’s not that easy. But, all things being equal, they will increase your chances. Good luck.
