Six Steps to Saving Money for your Halloween Party

by Colin Joss

Halloween parties are a blast. But they can cost a fortune. Invite lots of people and you need lots of food. And for a great atmosphere you need decorations, entertainment, and costumes. But relax. You can have a great party without breaking the bank. Read on for six hints to save money this Halloween.

1. Have a potluck meal. Instead of planning several snacks yourself, ask everyone to bring something. Make sure to be very specific as to what not to bring. For example, maybe you’ll make the main dish yourself or the desserts yourself. You don’t have to have a meal. You can also ask everyone to simply bring finger foods if your party will be later in the evening. If you are choosing to have a meal, plan something relatively easy and inexpensive to make, like Bar-B-Q sandwiches or cold cuts.

2. Don’t spend a fortune on a costume. You’ll have lots of other expenses. Rather than buying a costly costume, make your own home-made version. A pair of overalls and a shirt can become a farmer’s costume or a bed sheet can be a great start as a toga or a ghost. Rake through your closet and become inspired.

3. Plan ahead – way ahead. If you host a Halloween party every year, purchase party supplies in November when they go on sale. Of course, you’ll have to purchase candy and other food items fresh, but decorations and costumes can be found 70% off of more starting on November 1st. Check out party supply stores, but don’t forget to look for deals at department and discount stores as well.

4. Get twice the value of your dollar. Find stuff that can be used in different ways. Children can paint pumpkins at the party for decorations, and you can use the insides to make pies and baked goods. Save decorations and use those lights, fake webs, and garlands year after year.

5. Small is better. Don’t invite the entire neighborhood to your party. You probably don’t have the money or the speace. Keep your list small. Invite only your closest friends or make it adults only. People will understand that holding a big party is a lot of work and very expensive.

6. Bulk buy. You can find great deals on items like candy if you buy larger sized bags. And what you don’t use, you can freeze and use throughout the year.

Enjoy yourself. If you’re worried about money go to someone else’s party. Or if you do have your own party, follow the tips above to save some money.
