Identity fraud has continuously grown and is now considered as the fastest growing crime in America. It has taken many forms like identity cloning, commercial or business identity theft, financial, and criminal identity theft. It occurs when someone without authority uses the personal information of another person for the benefit of illegal activities like illegal immigration, espionage and other activities prohibited by law.

1. Since identity thieves know many ways to steal information, it is important that you are careful when throwing out your rubbish. It is safer to shred papers including letters with details of your personal information prior to putting them in the garbage.

2. It is essential that you should be defensive when someone asks for your personal information like details about your Social Security Number. Ensure that you are reminded of the privacy policy of any company asking for this information and that they are honest enough not to share your information with anybody else.

3. Leave and keep all your personal documents in a secured place. Never carry them on your person unless it is essential to do so.

4. Before paying your credit card bill, check if all the purchases listed are the actual merchandise and services that you have used. Another thing to remember is to keep track of the date of your credit card or bank statements delivery.

Placing a fraud alert on your account is one way of preventing further records being messed up.
