If you happen to watch a business show or business news on TV, you’d probably hear words or phrases like “stock market,” ‘trading,” “stocks” or “stock market trading.” What are these things and what is their significance? To answer your questions, here’s an overview on what stock market trading is.

Definition In simple terms, stock market trading is the voluntary buying and selling or exchange of company stocks and their derivatives. Stocks refer to the capital raised by a corporation by means of issuing and sharing shares. These are traded in a stock market just as commodities like coffee, sugar, wheat and rice are traded in a commodity market. The physical or virtual (as trading may take place online) marketplace for trading shares on the other hand is called stock exchange.

In 1792, twenty-four stockbrokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement under a buttonwood tree in Number 68 Wall Street. They drafted a constitution organizing themselves into the New York Stock & Exchange Board, what is now the world’s largest equities marketplace.

Because it is the largest equities marketplace in the world, billions of dollars of shares are traded daily. The total global market value of the listed companies is estimated at $25 trillion dollars. This includes non-U.S. companies which are worth $9.6 trillion dollars. The stock exchange’s primary function is to allow investors to buy and sell shares of the publicly traded companies they list. These companies are a cross-section of large, midsize and small capitalization companies.

There are companies that allow an investor to purchase stocks directly from the company. This is perfectly okay according to the Securities and Exchange Commission. These are called Direct Stock Plans. It is called a DSPP. The company may require that you already have stocks through employment with the company. It is not required in all companies.

It maybe a good idea to contact an individual company personally. The advantage to contacting the individual company yourself is that it allows you to use your preferences and then do a small amount of leg work. The company representative will give you the necessary forms and provide you with individual advice on how to set up pay roll deduction. In turn you can contact your banking institution, employer human resources or bill payer and set up the account.
