Philadelphia Liposuction Procedure

by Tania Gerner

Liposuction is an elective surgery and a form of cosmetic surgery. People have it done in order to remove unwanted and/or stubborn areas of excess fat. The stomach is a popular area for liposuction, albeit with some restrictions, as are the hips, buttocks, and thighs. There are many different types of liposuction procedures, and qualifications which much be met in order to have the surgery.

Some people simply cannot benefit from liposuction. If you are significantly overweight or obese, liposuction will not be able to help you. Ideally, you should only be slightly overweight in order to be a good candidate for liposuction. If you are too overweight, your skin loses a lot of its elasticity. Therefore, having fat removed with liposuction can leave you with hanging folds of skin. You need to be generally healthy as well with no overt health problems.

There are two key types of liposuction procedures, beginning with tumescent liposuction. With this type, the surgeon injects a mixture of painkiller, saline, and epinephrine into the parts of your body from which fat will be taken away. This allows for pain management both during and following the procedure. It also makes the surgery itself either by keeping your blood vessels contracted. This lowers the risk of blood loss.

Ultrasounds are also used in liposuction - at least, their energy is used. That energy actually causes fat cells to liquefy. This makes it much easier to remove. Laser assisted liposuction works in a similar fashion.

The general points of the procedure vary from patient to patient. If you have only a little bit of excess fat to be removed, you may be an outpatient. Large quantities of liposuction may require a hospital stay. Likewise, anesthesia may be local or general.

A cannula attached to a device used for suction are the tools used for liposuction procedures. The cannula is inserted through a series of small incisions which are made in areas where there are excess fat. The cuts are made between the skin and the muscles. Sometimes a standard suction pump is used, sometimes a syringe. The resulting body shape is smoother with this method.
