<p>All right, so you want to get strong and go to the gym to work. You may think that pumping weights is all you have to do, but it is not that simple.</p>
<p>It is nutrition that plays in big role when it comes to recovery and growth. You need to change your diet according to the increase or decrease of your muscle mass. If you gain muscle you need to eat more. If you loose muscle you need to eat less. How can you observe what is occurring inside your body?<br />

Watching your weight daily is important if you are trying to increase your mass. If your weight is going down or staying the same, you may need to consider eating more. If you find yourself gaining a lot of weight you need to take a closer look at what you&#8217;re eating. Be careful, while you can expect to gain fat while attempting to gain muscle, you should keep an eye on it to ensure you don&#8217;t gain too much fat.</p>
<p>Using body fat calipers is a great technique to assess whether muscle or fat is increasing. You can use the calipers every other week. If muscle seems to be going down according to your calipers, that is the evidence that you are not eating enough good nutrition. If the calipers reflect that the percent of bodyfat is increasing then you will have to consume less.</p>
<p>All good gyms will have a set of calipers and as long as the same person does the measurements every time you should be able to get a true reading as to what exactly is happening. Once you have obtained the amount of total millimeters and your bodyweight, the chart that comes with the calipers will show what bodyfat percentage you are.</p>
<p>In order to figure out what the amount of your body fat you have, you need to take your body weight, in pounds, multiply it by your body fat percentage. This formula will tell you what your total body fat is. Subtracting this amount from total weight will estimate your free fat mass. This total includes not just muscle but all structure in the body, but it is a good estimate for our purposes.</p>
<p>You should record and keep the figures you calculated for total body fat and for fat free mass. When you have your measurements taken you can check to see if the percentage of bodyfat has increased. If you do the correct exercise and eat correctly then your body fat will go down. And with the decrease of body fat, you will find that your muscles and fat free mass will go up. If you are not eating correctly you will discover that your fat free mass, muscle is decreasing and the bodyfat is increasing.</p>

<p>You obviously are trying to get yourself in shape. If you aren&#8217;t spending hours in the gym doing intense weight training, you are probably not going to achieve your desired results, and may think about enhancing your program. However, keep in mind that you must not overtrain.</p>
<p>If you work too hard without giving your body time to rest and recuperate between weightlifting sessions, you will get what is called overtraining.<br />

To understand overtraining, you first have to understand that when you are building muscle, you&#8217;re actually breaking muscle down. You&#8217;re not building the muscle in the gym, really. Instead, what you&#8217;re doing is breaking down muscle in the gym and producing tiny injuries in the muscle that then must heal and repair. When these injuries heal and repair, they heal and repair stronger than they were previously. Therefore, when you&#8217;re building muscle, you&#8217;re actually breaking down muscle first, and then letting your body rest and repair in between; this process is what actually builds muscle. </p>
<p>Overtraining deprives your body of needed rest and does not allow it to adequately build and repair itself between workouts. In fact, as opposed to destroying muscle, you&#8217;re actually building muscle when you notice this. Worse than that, though, you&#8217;re actually hurting yourself in a number of other ways, too. <p>Some people mistakenly believe that if they walk three times a week for a short period of time, they can lose weight easily. This is a myth. Effective weight loss through walking requires you to walk at least 45 minutes or more five to six days a week.<br />

The important thing to remember is to keep up to your walking on a regular basis. You will find it extremely hard to control your weight if you do not exercise consistently. It is also important to bear in mind that walking around your local area may not be enough, especially if you live in a flat area.</p>
<p>However, if you walk on a treadmill, you can get a more intense workout by elevating the grade, also known as the incline. Not only will the higher elevation increase your heart rate, but the muscles in your body will work harder and cause you to burn more fat.</p>
<p>If you engage in treadmill walking on a consistent basis, you&#8217;ll not only be able to lose the pounds, but they will stay off for good. If a treadmill walking workout tends to bore you, here are some ideas to make it more interesting:</p>
<p>Walk the Pyramid: This game challenges you both physically and mentally for a total of 30 minutes. Whenever you&#8217;re walking on your treadmill, increase the speed by .1 mph every 15 minutes. Do this for half of your workout and then decrease the speed .1 mph for the other 15 minutes.</p>
<p>1,2,3 Counting Steps: Let&#8217;s face it, working out on a treadmill can be boring. Break the monotony by counting your steps. Take a minute and count your steps and then take a minute break. Continue doing this throughout the duration of your workout. It will keep your workout interesting and over time you&#8217;ll see notice the number of steps you take increase, which will be a reward for you.</p>
<p>Step and Walk: This is an excellent technique because it combines all the benefits of using a treadmill with other forms of exercise. Split your workout into equal segments, chunks of 5 or 10 minutes are good. Now, walk on your treadmill for the first segment. Then get off the machine and do another exercise for the next segment - such as using a stepper, lifting weights or perhaps using a rowing machine. Then return to your treadmill for the third segment and repeat throughout your workout.</p>
<p>Travel the World: This is a fun little game where you map out the favorite routes through your neighborhood and then imagine yourself walking there while you&#8217;re doing your treadmill walking. What I did was actually record my journey through a local park on my camcorder, and then I watch this while doing my exercise and it&#8217;s like being outdoors no matter what the weather.</p>
<p>The key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to keep doing your treadmill walking without getting bored. Don&#8217;t be scared to invent your own games and techniques to keep yourself interested and help make your workout seem less like a chore and more like fun!</p>
