Much has been said about the advantages of antioxidants but did you know that they are able to help fight a number of diseases and conditions and all this from something found in plants. The amazing property of these phytonutrients is they seem perfectly compatible with our own bodies and can work in conjunction with them to protect us from disease.

To date, scientists have managed to index almost a 1,000 of these unusual compounds; but medical researchers believe that they are only just beginning and this could be the future of preventative health care in the world. Recent studies have indicated the phytonutrients found in fruit provide a whole host of natural health benefits; the anti-aging power of blueberries and the effect that cherries have on reducing joint pain, are just two of the benefits found so far.

The humble blueberry (famous for homemade pies) has very low sugar content whilst having many antioxidants that are good for our health. Often the easiest way for people to take fruit is in juice form which are readily available all year round; regular consumption can help our circulation and increase our ability to combat illness. Antioxidants contained in these fruits can also help ward off and fight disease and infections we may suffer from. The chance of heart disease can be reduced by eating apples which also contain these nutrients.

Citrus fruits can be helpful because of the phytochemicals they contain. Tart cherries for instance have a number of properties which work together to help people who have arthritis, gout and fibromyalgia. Most of us have already heard about the benefits that certain minerals and vitamins like B, c and E provide which have now become widely used in products. Another antioxidant is resveratrol has many infection and viral prevention properties and is found in the likes of blackberries, mulberries but more highly in blueberries.

These compounds can help or suppress harmful body aging processes that often end in heart attacks, stroke, faulty blood pressure, and Alzheimer’s disease. Others found in tomatoes make this one super-food in the prevention of heart disease. However, it is now recognized that the best way to receive a sufficient quantity of the antioxidants contained in a tomato is by having it as a puree in a dish using tomato sauce or as a juice. The sweet, juicy watermelon is actually packed with some of the most important in phytonutrients in nature. We are told to eat more fruit and now there is a very good scientific reason to do this.
