What if your thoughts and actions were not under your grasp? What if someone else were to drive you? Sounds spooky, doesn’t it? Well there is nothing spooky about it, it’s just hypnosis. The curiosity that drives us towards knowing more about it arises from the same idea of control that have been spoken about in the first two lines.

The area of discussion here is actually about subliminal hypnosis. Subliminal comes from the Latin word “Limen” which means threshold. Thus, the word Subliminal is defined as a mental state just below the threshold of consciousness. During this stage, the conscious cannot perceive any messages and only the sub-conscious mind is acutely aware of these subliminal messages being implanted.

The process initially calls for putting a person under hypnotism. While under trance, the sub conscious mind is being targeted. AT this stage, the hypnotist will subtlety implant subliminal messages into the recipient sub conscious mind. By doing so respectively, the hypnotist will be able to imprint these “messages” into the recipient mind. There, these messages will lay dormant until a “trigger” in a form of a signal or command awakens these messages into the conscious mind. If all these are done voluntarily, there is no problem. The problem only arises when these actions are not voluntary and are planted by those with ulterior motives.

A major problem associated with this approach is that the human mind sometimes will go into the subliminal stage automatically. An example of when this can happen is when despite being in a noisy crowd, we can block all the distracting noises around us and isolate and just focus on a single sound. This ability to just totally ignore all the external stimuli and just focus on a single point is an example of the subliminal mind taking over.

Attempts at usage of this subliminal hypnosis have been found in various fields starting from advertising to salesmanship. Persuasion of consumers is very important for the sale of a commodity and what better way than to draw their attention by hypnosis. Various such attempts can be accounted for where subliminal hypnosis has been used to sell stuff in the market place. Marketing firms spend loads of money to get these subliminal texts in their print, audio and video advertisements.

Whether these approaches are successful or not, no one really knows. However, it is always prudent to know more of subliminal hypnosis so that we can protect ourselves from unwarranted attentions. Furthermore, besides being able to protect yourself, there is also the therapeutic value in the process of subliminal hypnosis.
