Where as doctors and health care worker know the risks and understand what could cause high blood pressure there often are no symptoms prior to having a heart attack.

Knowing what could cause high blood pressure and taking the steps to reduce the risks is one of the best ways to treating hypertension.

One of the first things is that of salt. Salt is already in almost all processed food, you don’t need to add so much to everything you eat. There are also salt substitutes and even salt with reduced sodium that you can get at your local grocery store.

Being overweight, not just a pound or two, but 15% – 20% or more. Being overweight leads to many health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, problems with your joints (all that extra stress on the body), and more.

Alcohol consumption also plays a direct part in hypertension. It has been found in several studies, that the higher the alcohol consumption, the higher the blood pressure. However similar studies have also shown that moderate drinkers appear to have a lower blood pressure than non drinkers. One drink isn’t bad, but if you’re having 2, 3, 4 or more a night, every night of the week there is likely more to worry about.

Most everyone knows it, but the “pill” also increases the risk that you will have high blood pressure. Women who take the “pill” should be regularly, once or twice each year, having their blood pressure tested.

While less common, different illnesses or health conditions (even pregnancy), medications, and street drugs.

Seeing your doctor regularly and having an annual physical will ensure that your blood pressure is checked, but you can also do it yourself at your local pharmacist or with your own blood pressure cuff.
