When a beginner first buys a bonsai, it is usually a young tree, and while learning the basics, they begin to know how to look after their bonsai properly. There comes a point of time when the confidence grows enough to move on to more challenging forms of bonsai keeping. Including growing bonsai seeds.

Seed Dormancy.

Seeds, before they have a chance to grow, have to enter a period called dormancy, theres no set time limit on a seeds dormancy, it depends on the species as to when dormancy will end for your bonsai seeds. Some seeds like oak, may only be dormant from fall till spring, while others could last for 1 year to 18 months, like some pines.

Seed Germinating.

Through the cold winter months, the seed sits in wet soil, along with the elements soil bacteria start to soften the outer shell of the seed, when this happens it encourages the seed to grow. With our bonsai seeds we can artificially do what nature does naturally, and that is entice early growth.

Cold Stratification

When starting to plant your bonsai seeds in Autumn, you are doing what nature does in its own natural process, but we can quicken the process up of the over wintering period for our seeds. This we do indoors, and we call it cold stratification, this artificially prepares our bonsai seeds by placing the seeds into a container, then store the container in the refrigerator, which will imitate the winter period the bonsai seeds would go through. This method shortens the winter period and will assist the germination.

Sowing Your Seeds

Ensure the bonsai seeds are put into a container with good soil, spacing your seeds between 1/4 to 1/2 inch apart, under the surface, just check often as the months pass ensuring they dont dry out. With luck, in time, you will see the seeds germinating, with little shoots coming to the surface, and your half way there, though it will be a few years before they develop into bonsai.

Seed Preparation.

As mentioned above, it is likely your bonsai seeds could take a time to start growing, so have patience. You can assist your seeds along using the right fertilization, with moderation. From early spring untill the mid summer you can use 10 parts of Nitrogen, 10 parts of Phosphates, and 10 parts of potassium, using once a month, ideal time to use it is when soil starts to warm. Ensure the soil is kept moist, but not soggy or overly wet, or your bonsai seeds will perish.

For those starting out, gardening lawn care is important. Find the best information available for maintaining your yard.

by Andrew Caxton

For those starting out, gardening lawn care is important. Find the best information available for maintaining your yard.

Quite a bit of information regarding gardening lawn care is available to you, and you need it all. There are some aspects that you really need to know how to handle properly including proper methods to mowing your lawn, removing pests and adding fertilizers. These are just the start of the information you need, but highly important.

Proper Mowing

In gardening lawn care, mowing is one of the most important aspects of lawn care. There are several things to pay attention to in particular to get the results you want. First, mow your lawn in different directions with each mow rather than mowing along the same pattern every time. Doing this will allow you to see benefits in cutting off more of each weed leaf. Any leaf that may be leaning in one direction is still cut. This keeps them out of the competition with your grass.

Keep the clippings on the lawn. This gives several advantages including the fact that during a dry season, they add moisture to your lawn. This is because grass clippings are composed of 85 percent of water. They are also full of nutrients that the soil need to remain healthy for the grass you want to grow there.

Proper Watering

Regular watering of your lawn is important to gardening lawn care. Most know this but you also have to look at drainage of that water. For example, if you live in an elevated area, you need to add more because water run down will be substantial. You may want to consider adding an irrigation system to your lawn so that the area is regularly watered well.

Handling Pests

Perhaps one of the worst things working against you in gardening lawn care is the pest. The best thing for this is to have a dense turf to protect from the invasion. This will also keep out weeds. Fix any problems with your lawn when you notice them so that they are handled before becoming larger problems.

Fertilizing Properly

Finally, an important part of gardening lawn care is providing your lawn with the nutrients it needs to remain healthy. To do this, add fertilizer correctly. Remember that fertilizer should only be added when the soil has dropped below the necessary nutrient level for maintaining healthy grass. Sometimes all you need to do is to add compost to your lawn to give it the necessary nutrients it needs. Gardening lawn care requires a bit of attention to these details!

The walkways you install into your landscape can make your garden more accessible, retain its beauty, and ad to the overall design. They are an integral part of your garden’s look and feel. Functionally, walkways offer a path through your garden that allow people to traverse them without disturbing the plants, grass, and other things you’ve set out for them to enjoy. It doesn’t take long for the places where people often tread to start to look trampled and faded if there are no walkways to protect it.

The beauty of walkways comes from the aesthetic mix of both the materials used and the shapes they and the walkway’s path take. Just as color can make them match or clash with the overall ambiance of your garden, their shape can either cut through the design or flow with it beautifully.

There are a variety of materials to make walkways from, each with its own design elements and functional properties. Interlocking concrete blocks and cobble-stone style bricks are the most popular choices. A bed of either heavy sand or small-pebbled gravel is usually laid and then the interlocking bricks are hammered into place using a wooden or rubber mallet. Bricks are laid in a similar fashion, being pressed together and tamped into place to firmly set them. This “floating” foundation allows the ground to heave with frost or moisture without dislocating the pathway.

Walkways are so integral to the design of a well-made garden than they are usually planned right from the beginning sketches and drawings before work even begins. Elements like bordering flowerbeds, concrete or rock edges, or bark strips are common walkway enhancers, defining the path’s edges for the eye.

Well-made walkways will have a slope or “crown” to them (a hump in the middle) that allows water to drain off so that it does not puddle on the walkway. This makes the walkway safer to traverse, cleaner, and keeps puddles from forming for mosquitoes to congregate in. The bricks and stones used are usually well-textured so that they have a good frictional quality to give a good grip when walking on them, minimizing slipping and dangerous falls.

Other common elements that are included in walkways are casual seating areas (benches, platforms, etc.), handrails for bridges or raised areas, or lighting elements for nighttime ambiance, and perhaps a great pool background to enhance the whole area. Other additions such as bird baths, feeders, squirrel hutches, pet-friendly plants, and other additions can make lively animals move in and around the walkway to give great entertainment and life to the gardens around the walkway.

Flower bulbs are fleshy underground lumps of leaves, stems, or roots. Some bulbs are more accurately called corms or tubers. Tubers and corms are both sections of thickened stem, while tubers also have modified buds. Tubers, corms, and bulbs will all grow into full plants. There is a vast variety of bulbs available, allowing a great range of flower shapes and colors. Planting a variety of bulbs in your garden is an easy way to create a beautiful array of colorful blooms.

Many beautiful flowers are planted as bulbs. Gardeners enjoy planting bulbs because they produce so many flowers, with very little care or effort required. Most bulbs bloom very early in the season, with some producing flowers in early March.

When planting your bulbs, they should be planted about 3 to 6 inches deep. The larger the bulb, the deeper it should be planted. Use a spade or shovel to dig a small hole in the soil, then place your bulb in the hole, and replace the dirt. If you are planting a bulb in poor soil, consider adding bone meal or better soil in the hole. This can help your bulbs grow better.

Every spring, you should fertilize your flower bulbs with manure or chemical fertilizer. However, keep fresh manure away from the roots or the bulb itself, instead working the fertilizer well into the soil. While your plant is blooming, you may wish to cut off most of the buds, so that the plant can devote its energy to making the remaining flowers as beautiful as they can be. You must water your bulbs regularly. If your soil is generally quite try, punch a few holes around the plant, so that the moisture can easily make its way to the roots.

If you wish to have early flowering bulbs even on your small backyard, consider many different varieties of tulips which blossom as early as April. Other bulbs which usually flower early in the season include narcissus, grape hyacinth, snowdrop, winter aconite, iris, and crocus. Because most gardeners and landscape designers try to time their plants so that they always have flowers blooming throughout the season, early-flowering bulbs are an excellent choice.

For bulbs which will flower in mid-summer, try Autumn crocus, Gladiolus, Cluster amaryllis, lilies, bearded iris, dahlias, peonies, Summer hyacinth, Calla lilies, or Mariposa. All of these flowers can add beauty and interest in your garden during the season when you probably spend the most time in your garden.

by Kent Higgins

Nowadays, everyone is talking about lowering our footprint on the earth. Many are pointing out the limited resources we have, including fresh water. With droughts and uncertainty, a lot of gardeners are changing their lifestyles to match. What about your gardening techniques? Water is one of the most important resources for your garden and is becoming increasingly regulated by cities and counties nationally as it becomes scarce due to droughts.

Luckily, there are many techniques that can be used to lower the amount of water used in your garden without reducing the yields you expect or the beauty you want. Here are some of those techniques to help you reduce your water usage in your garden.

Use Mulch

If you haven’t already been mulching your plants, do so now. Mulch helps to limit the amount of water that evaporates from the soil and organic mulches like clippings or wood chips ad organic matter and nutrients to the soil, giving an extra bonus to your plants. Plastic mulches can limit evaporation, but are not usually tillable, so consider the options besides the price tag. All mulches limit infiltration soil loss from erosion as well, so mulching is a great boon to the gardener.

Distribute Water Wisely

Most gardeners know that sprinklers and sprayers are not very efficient at distributing water the garden, though they enjoy widespread use. They are easy and cover large areas, though. Sprayed water, however, lands mostly on foliage (which does no good) while much of it evaporates into the air before ever even hitting the ground. Soaking techniques and tools, like soaker hoses, flood irrigation, drip systems, and similar methods, are much more efficient at distributing water in quantity. You’ll find that your overall water usage can be cut by 25% or more if you use these methods rather than sprinklers.

Water That Which Needs It Most

Focus your watering on plants that need it the most, such as newly-planted or transplanted seeds and plants. Plants with limited root systems or high humidity requirements should also get attention first. Most well-established plants (especially natives) will be able to withstand a drought. They still need water, of course, but you may be able to cut back on how much without seriously affecting their yield or beauty.

Water At The Right Time

Watering in the early morning or late evening cuts out much of the loss from evaporation as the heat of the day is not there to facilitate it. Early morning is best, as the night coolness still clings to the air. Morning watering also helps keep plants cool throughout the day.

Supplement Your Water

Collecting water from downspouts during rains is a great way to supplement the water you’re using in the garden. Plus it’s free! If you use chemical-free water to clean buckets, garden pots, wash your car , wash your dishes, etc., you can save the runoff to give it to your garden. When washing the car, position it so that most of the runoff water will go into your garden or onto your lawn. This way you do not have to buy a self watering planter for your garden.

These are a few ways you can deal with drought and help save precious freshwater sources while still tending and caring for your garden. Happy gardening!

You are starting a lawn or reseeding the one you already have. Planting new seed needs some reliable information to guide you in this task and have a successful outcome.

When you plant grass in an area which has a hostile climate to the new grass, all the advice and tips received are welcomed. Learn here valuable advice..

Tilling And Cleaning The Soil

Clean the soil of any debris, organic matter, stones and other objects that can obstruct the growing of your seeds. Seeds need the best available conditions to grow and you are supposed to give them in an efficient way. Clean and till the soil as the first step to make it more hospitable for the seeds, they need to find a comfortable and rich environment and it begins with a clean soil that cover their requirements. Condition the soil before seeding. You can find many commercial soil conditioners, there are organic varieties, too. Engaged in the organic lawn care program, you can choose an organic soil conditioner. The objection made to organic product is cost, but the benefits are greater, they help to balance environment actors, like bacteria classified as good and avoid the destruction of beneficial forms of life. Beneficial bacteria and insects are respected by organic products. Organic care given to the seed will boast improved results when the bouncing, green turf will be spreading over your lawn. Strong, healthy and lively, the grass will endure any climatic adversity.

Soften the soil to provide a suitable bed for seeds. If you wonder how to soften it, the reply is : by tilling. This condition will produce a quick development of the seed. After that, apply the soil conditioner you have selected

Watering Your Lawn

Watering is a crucial point in growing any type of grass. Many people excess in watering using a daily watering routine for mature grass that can damage grass and roots by drowning. Water with moderation making sure your seed won’t be hurt by losing too much of the soil.

Water enough to maintain moisture when the grass is growing and still small. Once a day you can wet the soil with water without exceeding. If your area supports heavy rainfall, reduce watering to the minimal. Don’t water after a rain.

Weed Control

Use organic weed control products and pull out weeds by hand. Avoid the chemical herbicides, that can be dangerous to your new grass

Organic Solution : New Lawn Care Tips

Organic solution will ease the management of lawn care problems. Adopt the organic solution and reduce the problem before they start.

Yard and garden landscaping for the home is not much different than landscaping on a larger scale for huge complexes and businesses. Your yard can look as great as the greenest golf course or the most well-manicured office complex. All it takes is some ingenuity, some work, and some of your spare time. Designing your own landscaping is fun and exciting, as you transform your yard into one the entire neighborhood will envy.

There are several products on the market to help you with your landscaping ideas. You can use software to design and visualize your new yard before you’ve shoveled one bucket of dirt or planted a single flower. There are also plenty of websites and books out there so you can find out what experts think about your climate and geographic area and how that can effect your plans.

There are even great television shows and do-it-yourself catalogs full of ideas and plans to make your landscaping imagination take off. You’ll find out that a lot of landscaping upgrades and ideas are actually very easy to execute and don’t require nearly as much elbow grease or sweat labor as you might have thought. Whatever your final plans are, make sure you’re flexible enough to modify some details if need be and that you’ve got the budget to go ahead with your plans. Remember that landscaping can be done over time and doesn’t have to be completed all at once, so budget accordingly.

Keeping mistakes and problems to a minimum is all about planning and know-how. Make sure you understand what you’re going to be doing, how it’s best done, and how to get it done safely. Doing the research required is not arduous work, but it is very important. There are a lot of resources out there to help you learn what you’ll need to know, so utilize them. Keep in mind that most home improvement stores have experts on hand who can show you how to do many things. They’ll often do this for free, so take advantage of this resource.

Before you begin digging, planting, and building, you’ll want to call your local utilities to have them come out and mark where underground power lines, gas lines, and water and sewer might be. They can usually tell you the approximate depth and will gladly mark it for you in paint or with stakes so you can work around or over them safely. In some areas, it’s against the law to begin digging without getting this done.

While you’re getting that done, check into zoning restrictions for your neighborhood and make sure that your plans are OK. For most, these restrictions usually only apply to larger “permanent” structures and do not apply to foliage, short walls, and other landscaping items. It’s a good idea to check anyway, just in case. Make especially sure to check if your neighborhood has a “housing covenant” which you signed when you moved in. These are often very restrictive, especially for non-standard changes like zeroscaping and alternative desert plantings.

Once you’re squared away with the legalities and the utilities, you can start work. Make sure you’re having fun and don’t worry if you can’t complete all of it in a weekend! It’s a project, not a job, so take your time and go easy on yourself. Your enjoyment of the process is just as important as the process itself is! Happy landscaping!

But they save a lot of time in the long run and make gardening easy. Especially during the planting season, gardeners cannot afford to use so much man and more willing to rely on technology.

Regarding the gloves, one should be choosy, as it depends on the kind of gardening he or she prefers. Lather made hand gloves will not persist chemicals of water. So its better to avoid them. Its wise to learn which kind of gloves are most suited before taking the next step.

A major cause of the spread of virus or bacterial diseases in the world of gardening is not removing the year old crops in time. One needs to take away the weeds as well as the leftovers of the crops from the previous year to avoid unnecessary snags from springing up.

For a gardener, its very important to keep in touch with garden materials stores.
It is important to understand your natural landscape, soil and climate when you are planting garden flowers. There are many types of gardens you can plant so you must first think of a few things and make some decisions before hand. You may have an idea for your garden already. Make sure this garden design is feasible. If you want tropic plants but live in a cold climate then you may have to rethink your garden.

Budgets are important as plants, supplies and accessories can all add up before you know it. If you are only planting a few flowers then a budget may not be necessary but a complete renovation of an existing garden or new garden will be pricey. You also may not be able to get certain plants and need to change your design.

Organic gardening has become very popular over the years as many people are more knowledgeable about what harmful chemicals can do to humans as well as the environment. Due to the influx of organic farming and gardening there is a range of organic products that can be found for an affordable price. If you do decide to use chemicals make sure you completely understand how to use and protect yourself.

Most beginners have no knowledge about planting flower gardens so don’t let that get you down. Your garden will evolve as your knowledge increases or tastes changes. It is very easy to fix plants and change things if you are unhappy with how it looks or your plants aren’t doing well.

It is important to have some sturdy gardening tools that will last. You also will need to prep your soil before planting as the majority of soils need a little help. Adding compost or manure to the soil helps to balance the pH as well as break down any clay spots that don’t drain well or help to solidify very sandy soils. You can obtain compost or manure from a gardening store, local farmer, or local horse of animal farm. If you are really ambitious you can create your own compost pile from food scraps.

Areas of your garden will be in sun or shade so you should plan accordingly. Certain plants like roses and perennial flowers need a lot of sun but others like foxglove, hostas and geraniums prefer the shade. A little garden planning can go a very long way.

A wide range of house-plants, grown to have beautiful flowers and foliage, is now available at nurseries. However, many times the life of these plants is unnecessarily short-lived because of unsuitable treatment by their new owners. However, with knowledge of their requirements and appropriate care, these plants can easily be grown successfully indoors.

For the most part, these plants are easy to grow. However, a few require special care because they are tropical plants. Many plants are popular gifts during the Christmas season, but often their new owners do not understand how to provide the correct care and attention. Therefore, you should read a little about your new plant, so that you can help it thrive and keep its full beauty for as long as possible.

If you are a beginner with indoor plants, you should proceed cautiously, first choosing easy to grow plants. Most nurseries can help you choose appropriate plants that will not be difficult to grow. After you have some experience growing these plants, you may wish to attempt more difficult species.

Many unusual species of plants, previously grown only in hot-houses, have recently become popular for decoration in homes. Some of them are native to the tropics, so they require special care. Many can be acclimatized for growth indoors in temperate countries. However, if you are a beginner, you should proceed with caution when choosing such plants. Some are more capable of growing in a hot, dry climate than others, and these should be chosen first, to gain more experience in growing such plants indoors.

Most often, if a plant has thick, leathery foliage, it will respond best to indoor conditions. This is because the leaves are constructed to reduce transpiration to a minimum, which suits them well for the conditions found in a typical living room. Dry living rooms tend to increase transpiration, or the loss of moisture by the leaves. In these plants with thick foliage, there are devices which help the plants to reduce transpiration. The Christmas Cactus is a common example of this type of plant. Indoor houseplants such as the Pony Tail Palm react in the same way.

On the other hand, plants such as the maidenhair fern, Cyclamen, or Fuchsia, have thin leaves. These lose moisture very quickly, which dries out the plant. As a result, they are not easy to cultivate indoors. They grow best in a moist atmosphere, but many living rooms are too dry for them. Any attempt to make the room a more hospitable climate for the plants will be damaging to the furnishings of the rooms.
