My Quest to Build an Indoor Herb Garden

If I buy my fresh Herbs at a Supermarket and use them in my cooking I am mostly disappointed with the quality and the result.

The longer it is between picking the herb from the garden and you using it significantly impacts on the flavor.

So far, I have been growing some herbs on the veranda outside my kitchen, as well as some down the steps from there, where we have a washing line set up.

The ones on the deck are grown in normal soil and the results have been mixed, it is currently winter here in Sydney Australia ” so, not expecting too much growth ” in the summer I get good results from this way of growing.

However, my most success has been using a Hydroponics system I bought last year. the Basil is superb and the Lemon Grass has taken over everything!

Why is he telling us all of this, you are probably asking?

Well, it seems that I have a lazy streak, well hidden, I hope but a lazy streak nonetheless. While I have these great herbs within 20 paces or so, I find it a bit of chore to go outside and pick them while I am preparing food!

The perfect result for me would be to have an Indoor Herb Garden, ideally situated in the kitchen window, so, I just grab whatever fresh herb i need in my cooking there and then.

The quick answer, I suppose, would be just to buy one of those systems that create an Indoor Herb Garden. However, the one that seems to be the best is not available down here and the one that is, does not get great reviews.

Why reinvent the wheel? I have been very successful with the Hydroponics System, so, I might as well try and do the same inside and have a purpose built Indoor Herb Garden.

This will be the tale of my journey to make an Indoor Herb Garden.

I am also, trying to learn about the Internet, so, thought Id combine the two objectives and put up a Web Site dedicated to the Indoor Herb Garden Challenge and keep a diary of my attempts.

Although I am based in Sydney Australia, the techniques I am planning to use, should translate to any country worldwide.

I am sure there will be lots of people saying I cant do it for a variety of valid scientific reasons, but as they say in Australia ” Give It A Go You Mug !!!

So, cheer me along!
