Improve Your Home’s Appearance With Vinyl Siding

by Eric Slarkowski

Vinyl siding is a popular choice for homeowners who want to improve their home’s appearance without painting. Though vinyl is fairly inexpensive and long-lasting, there are some pros and cons to consider before installing siding. Benefits to vinyl siding is its durability, low-cost and easy maintenance. It comes in a variety of grains, colors and thickness making it a practical home improvement choice for many homeowners. The following describes some of these benefits in greater depth.

Durability: One of the main reasons vinyl siding is chosen by homeowners is because it is long-lasting and durable. Vinyl siding can withstand most weather conditions without the need to worry about severe damage and also years of sunlight without fading. Newer vinyl is even stronger than older vinyl versions and is less likely to become brittle and crack.

Maintenance: Another benefit to vinyl siding is that it is easy to maintain. You never need to paint the siding nor does it fade from elements. The only regular maintenance required is a spray wash annually, or even bi-annually. Vinyl siding does have a new look each year. If moisture becomes a problem, you will need to re-caulk the joints between the trim and siding.

Cost Effective: In the long-term, vinyl siding can be a cost-effective choice in home improvement. Repainting and repairing the wood on your house can be more expensive than siding. The initial cost of the siding depends on the size of the home and the quality of the siding you choose. The grain and thickness will affect the total cost. It has been suggested, though, that vinyl siding can serve as an extra layer of insulation thus reducing energy bills.

Looks: Vinyl siding comes in a variety of colors and many grains that will suit most homes. Newer siding has the added benefit of the color baked through the vinyl rather than simply applied. This results in the color remaining true over a long period of time. It will also not show scratches or other imperfections.

Though vinyl siding is a more popular choice, there are some misconceptions about siding that should be considered, particularly that it is indestructible and maintenance-free. Keep in mind the following precautions before making your final choice.

Severe Weather Conditions: It is true that most vinyl siding can stand up to most weather conditions, some siding cannot and can be damaged in severe weather. Vinyl siding is often less durable than wood in the more severe conditions, such as heavy and violent winds which can lift the panels from the wall. Debris can also cause damage by puncturing the siding. When damage does occur, remember that the entire panel will need replaced and it sometimes is difficult to match the colors exactly after a few years.

Moisture Trap: Vinyl siding does require little maintenance to maintain its new appearance, but it can trap moisture which can cause mold and mildew to grow. The moisture can also seep through to the inside of the house and cause damage to the interior walls.
