There Is More To Shar Peis Than Wrinkles

The Mini Shar Pei is seventeen inches in height and cannot exceed that height in order to be considered a Mini Shar Pei. They will have either the horse or brush coat that cannot be longer then one inch on the back. They have tiny triangular ears and look like miniature hippopotamuses.

Mini Shar Peis can only be a solid color with a bluish or black tongue. The colors range from red, fawn, black and brown. The puppies are completely wrinkled with the adults taking the brunt of the wrinkles in the face and neck area while only some wrinkling will be on the body. There are some Mini Shar Peis that are tight skinned, with only wrinkles on the face.

Mini Shar Peis come from a recessive gene in the DNA and not some physical malady as was once thought. There has been a Miniature Shar Pei Club formed to ensure the correct breeding of the Mini Shar Pei dogs. Once only found from rescue groups, Mini Shar Peis are now more accessible for the public to purchase.

The Mini Shar Pei is a short dog that is broad and square. Their most pronounced characteristic is the wrinkling around his face. He is a good-natured dog with a flair for independence. He is fiercely loyal to his family and will defend them from any stranger. Mini Shar Peis may be little short dogs, but they are mighty powerful. The Chinese first bred Shar Peis hundreds of years ago to be fighting dogs. They evolved into guard dogs until they almost became extinct. They have made a major impression on the world in the last seventy-five years. Shar Peis must be socialized early in their lives or they will become naturally aggressive. This goes back to their Chinese ancestors fight training.

They are fiercely loyal to their families and will defend them from any stranger. If a Mini Shar Pei is not socialized early in his life he will become naturally aggressive towards people. The obedience training and socialization is a major component to mastering this breed. They are small but powerful dogs and become quite defensive when their own territory or family is in question. Mini Shar Peis are loveable, funny and very affectionate with their own family members. They make great family pets. Mini Shar Peis make great companion dogs especially for the elderly.

The Mini Shar Pei is a dog that goes back into ancient Chinese ancestry. They worked as the official guard dogs for the Chinese royal family. The English word for Shar Pei is sand coat, referring to the dog’s coarse coat.

Their eyes and ears are very small which makes them hard to grab as well. They gained a nickname as the Golden Lions. Eventually, the Shar Pei and Mini Shar Pei were the rarest breed on the planet.

But the Shar Pei and Mini Shar Pei are becoming one of the most popular breeds of all time. As puppies these dogs are adorable to every eye and when sold in pet stores they do not last very long.
