The History And Elegance Of Boating

When you think of boats what is the first image that comes to your mind? Perhaps it is beautiful sail boats that you can see on a clear and sunny day in summer on the beach. Or perhaps it is the vast ocean liners that you have seen in movies or perhaps in the jetty. If you pause to ponder, you will realize that there are indeed so many different kinds of boats, used for various objectives. Boats and ships have occupied pride of place in terms of international travel and tourism from quite some time onwards, not to mention their role in shaping and changing the very course of history. When Columbus set sail for India by a sea route, little did he know that he would end up discovering the beautiful and bountiful land which is now known as America.

Boat Evaluation Before That Sale, In Ten Stages

Boat evaluation may seem like a daunting task for the uninitiated, but it’s actually not impossible if you follow a couple of easy guidelines. Besides having a general idea of the value of a certain class of boat, there are a series of points that are more important than others. Here they are, summed up in a Decalogue:

1) Check the boat’s hull first, having the vessel out of the water if at all possible. Take note of any scratches, dents, repairs, or other points of interest that may need extra repairs and reduce the value of the boat.

Use Safety Precautions When Launching a Fixed-Keel Sailboat

If your sailboat has a keel that pulls up, you might consider yourself lucky. This type of boat can be launched just like you would launch a regular motorboat. But if your sailboat has a fixed keel, it will take some detailed procedures. Remember, keep safety first! With a fixed keel, the trailer has to back down to the end of the ramp to get the boat into water deep enough to float and then be disconnected from the trailer. Your tow vehicle cannot back it down far enough without getting submerged. So you must follow a set of safe steps for your successful launch.

Do you have the proper equipment to do the job safely? Your tow truck needs to be at least a mid-sized SUV or pickup truck, something fairly heavy. That weight is needed for safety. It is essential to keep all sections balanced, the truck, the trailer, and the boat.

Mercruiser Engines Weather the Years

by Fabian Toulouse

When you do business with a company that has a long history, you can rest assured that they are doing something right. A company that has ridden out a world war and the various economic recessions of the past seven decades has to be on top of their game. In the marine engine industry, that company is Mercury Marine, and they have been creating great engines since 1939 when America was just beginning to recover from the Great Depression and Hitler was running amuck in Europe.

The company, having been started in Wisconsin, was originally supposed to help dairy farmers. When Carl Kiekhaufer bought an outboard motor company, he was wanting to make magnetic milk separators. However, the three hundred faulty outboard motors that were thrown in with the deal changed his course. His repaired and mail-order marketed engines were so sturdy that they quickly became in demand. In 1940, he took orders for 16,000 engines at the New York Boat Show alone. Suddenly, the dairy farmers were on their own!

Boat Engines Deserve Serious Consideration

by Fabian Toulouse

Boat owners have a large selection of choices before them when it comes to purchasing an engine. There are lots of factors to consider, including the boat’s weight and the planned uses for your boat. (When calculating weight, be sure to add in the weight of passengers, cargo, and fuel, which can total hundreds of pounds.) If you install an engine with too much horsepower, it will drive up unnecessary fuel costs and possibly make the boat run faster than is safe. Conversely, too little horsepower is bad, too. The engine will work too hard and maintenance issues can multiply. Your boat’s manufacturer should give you solid recommendations on horsepower, however.

There are three basic varieties of marine engines and three types of fuel delivery systems. Engine types include outboard, inboard, and stern drive. Each has its own advantages, but the most popular-at least for pleasure boats-is the stern drive engine. It involves an on board engine that drives the boat through a shaft powering the propeller beneath the craft.

The trawler yacht stems from its working cousins, the trawler fishing boat and the tugboat. Whether it is tradition or preference, often these yachts are equipped with Bitts and / or Bollards just like their relatives. Of course they have cleats as well, but the Bitts and Bollards are there to do the big jobs.

Now if your yacht is equipped with one of these babies, you might want to know the correct way to belay a line to one. Let’s look at them first as there are many different styles. Even ff your boat doesn’t have one of them then you should pay attention anyway. Sooner or later the docks that you pull up to will present one of these varying styles, especially if you travel around the world as trawler folks like to do.
