The Plaza Mayor draws millions of tourists every year and is one of Madrid’s most famous attractions.
While not an architectural work of art, the Plaza is one of the best places in Madrid to experience first hand Madrid’s friendly atmosphere. Being popular with tourists and Spanish citizens alike, it is an excellent place to get to know other citizens of Madrid and interact with them.
Founded thousands of years before, the Plaza Mayor formed its estimated recent form in 1790 following the last fire that took place. Political debates, bullfights, beheadings and festivals have all taken place in the The Plaza Mayor which was widely used as a public gathering. Holding up to 50,000 people at one time, squaring off at around 100m on each of it’s sides, it doesn’t seem to be on such a large scale. It’s often crowded, particularly so in the summer months. Buildings that encircle the Plaza are convenient places for looking down upon events that are taking place down below. If you have time, it is recommended to make your way to these buildings, as you will be out of the bustle of people and able to enjoy the sights and sounds the Plaza Mayor has to offer.
