While many visit Edinburgh for business as well as pleasure virtually all will admit that they most wish to visit Edinburgh Castle. In 1603, when the thrones of Scotland and England were united, it seemed as though the Royal Family lost all interest in Scotland in preference to it’s richer, southern, neighbor. It was not until 1822 that interest was generated by the famous author Sir Walter Scott when he arranged a visit for King George IV. The “one and twenty daft days”, as it became known, was full of pageantry which included many embellishments of Scott’s romantic ideas of medieval Scotland.

Orlando’s Wonderful World of Nature

by Jackie Rudolph

Richard Louv, author of the book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder has coined the term Nature-Deficit Disorder to describe what research shows is a lack of appreciation of nature in children today. Some of our children are urban bound and do not have access to state parks or other nature centers. However, Mr. Louv describes most of our children as overly ‘plugged in.’ They spend most of their time in front of the computer, television, or video games and too little time outside playing, camping, fishing, biking, hiking, or taking part in other outdoor activities that foster an appreciation for nature.

Richard Louv is a co-founder of the Children and Nature Network, an organization which seeks to education parents, teachers, and other adults about the importance of fostering an appreciation of nature in our children. To learn more about the Network, please see www.childrenandnature.org.

The Isle of Harris and Tweed

by Angus Macleod

Scotland is only a small country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. For much of it’s history the nation and it’s people have been incredibly poor but from this impoverished society some of the most influential people came forth to make their mark upon our world. There are few countries in the world that have not been directly influenced by the hands of the Scottish but few consider this when asked to think of Scotland and most of us would rather bring to mind the likes of Tartan and Harris Tweed.

It can be said that most people think that Harris Tweed and tartan are very ancient but the sad truth is that they are fairly recent developments which only date back to Victorian times. Sir Walter Scott, the famous author, and others helped to create a wonderful image of a romantic Scotland which Queen Victoria fell in love with. Though tartan patterns date from this period the “traditional Scottish” created by Scott was heavily influenced by Highland culture.

by Clinton Maxwell

Are you thinking about taking up the challenging and exhilarating activity of hiking? It is surely something that’s rewarding but it?s hard to know what to expect if you?ve never tried it. Here are some things to expect and some myths about hiking.

Many people think of the negatives that are associated with hiking. There are insects, blisters on your feet, sore legs and an aching back. While this may sound unpleasant, there are many rewards which outweigh these drawbacks. You?ll be able to get outside the city and enjoy the fresh air and the chance to commune with nature. Not only will you be able to get physical exercise but you?ll also have some solitude to gain mental release. Having a hiking a buddy will also give you time to connect with a friend or a relative (or make new friends).

Tweed and the Isle of Harris

by Angus Macleod

While Scotland is only a small nation with an historically small population the influence of the Scots upon the world of today is disproportional. Throughout history a disproportionate number of Scottish men and women have played incredibly important roles in the history of the vast majority of countries of the world. From the Founding Fathers to American Presidents, British Prime Ministers to the great many explorers and missionaries the Scottish have help shape modern society. However Scotland is most widely known for it’s tartan, Harris Tweed, bagpipes and the likes.

Taking A Hebrides Cycling Tour

by Angus Macleod

Cycling is an extremely popular sport and more and more people are discovering the pleasures of taking a cycling tour in preference to other types of vacation. Most choose to tour areas where the ground is rather flat and any hills are but gentle slopes while others prefer to visit areas which offer much more of a challenge. The Isle of Harris in the Western Isles (also known as the Outer Hebrides) of Scotland continues to increase in popularity for cycling tours and vacations and is well worth consideration if you are a competent and athletic cyclist.

The Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles) is a group of over two hundred islands found off the west coast of Scotland in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The vast majority of islands are now uninhabited with only a handful remaining populated. There are two distinctive land masses with the Isle of Harris and Isle of Lewis part of one in the north and to the south the islands of North and South Uist with a number of other smaller islands dotted around. Happily these islands have excellent transport links and it is possible to tour from the very south up to the northern tip via a network of double and single track roads, bridges, causeways and ferries.
